Blogging tips I learned at University (Blogging = University)

Yes, as some of you know I’m still going to university here in Spain. I’m a law student, currently on the third year of my career with two more years to go. (For those who don’t know me yet, what are you waiting to send an email or a tweet? I’d love to meet you).

Apart from studying laws, I’ve noticed that University is just like the blogging world. Let me show you.

You can learn a few things when going to university. It’s nice moment on your life, pretty tough, but still nice and fun.

Apart from the regular things you learn there, it’s funny how your viewpoint can change if seeing from the blogger point of view.

I’ve realized that blogging and studying at University have some points in common that could be taken as blogging tips, let’s go check them out.

Relationships

-> University student viewpoint: At the campus, unless you’re a monster or some kind of God, you have the need to build relationships (Aristoteles). They are built naturally with classmates and teachers.

To clarify, you need relationships. They will help you to know you’re still a human being, to get mate’s notes from the class when you can’t assist… You need them.

-> Blogging viewpoint: If we start just by saying that a blog is a communication tool, the whole internet is, then you will quickly realize why relationships is so important when blogging.

Deals, backlinks, word of mouth traffic, help… You can get all that just by making the effort to meet new people and taking care of your friends to avoid the relationship to be deteriorated.

Party

-> University viewpoint: Unless you’ve a girl/boyfriend, you would want to go with the guy / girl you dream of to the end of the year’s party.

In order to do that, before approaching a bit, you just need to ask her/him! You need to stop thinking “I’m going for it, but not today, tomorrow or later next week” because the girl/boy can get caught by another boy/girl.

You need to ACT and stop THINKING about doing it.

-> Blogging viewpoint: Sooo many people, so many friends asking me how am I doing with the blog, whether I’m already making money or not…

I always give a positive feedback. I’m doing good, I love writing and I love blogging, and yeah, already making some bucks here and there.

Still, I get the same answer every day: “Cool, I’m planning to setting up my own blog. Let’s see when I can do it”.

Wrong. Stop thinking about it and do it, else your time may pass on. Are you afraid of fail? Well, what can you lose? Nobody’s reading your blog (because you don’t have one), so when you receive your first visit, you will have already won.

Popularity

-> University viewpoint: Typical movie situation: Want popularity? Go with the top popularity guys on the campus.

And it’s true. You will get more popularity because those guys will introduce you to new people, hence, you’ll be publicly known.

-> Blogging viewpoint: It’s the same. You need to grow around the top bloggers on your niches and try to build a win-win relationship. This can be hard, but just like everything else on life, unless you’re sitting on a $5 billion dollar fortune.

Backup plan

-> University viewpoint: Sometimes you don’t feel like going to a particular class. It just happens. But you can’t just going elsewhere without a backup plan.

What I do is to ask a friend to share with me the class notes to keep track of the class. Although it’s not the way it should work, it can be a path when you have a bad day.

-> Blogging viewpoint: Need a backup plan. Always. In terms of traffic, you can’t depend on Yahoo, Google, Msn etc. Those are search engines. It’s pretty hard (for some keywords) to reach organic traffic by climbing to the top on the ranks, but it’s amazingly easy to fall off and stop receiving that vital traffic.

Another example, you need to maximize the income sources. Let’s say you make the 90% of your income from Bidvertiser, but it suddenly bankrupt. What would you do?

You need backup plans to stay safe.

Still have more things to share, but that will be on my next post.

It would be nice if some university student drop a comment sharing its experiences.

Thanks for reading.

Great analogy. I really like analogy about act now thing. Yeah — if you do not act now, you will wait forever. That is for sure.

Hello, I found this blog from a comment you left on John Chow. :)

I’m surprised with all the drinking, parties and chasing the opposite sex that you guys have the time to write blog posts.

Or maybe that is just British university students? :D

Haha, we’re still able to find a bit of time to do the writing part. But yes, that is part of our life. Big part of it, I must say.

Glad you enjoy on England too, I would have loved so much to study there, I just love England.

Thanks for the comment mate.
