Make money blogging – Only for heroes?

Hero: “ […] Later, hero (male) and heroine (female) came to refer to characters who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, display courage and the will for self sacrifice – that is, heroism – for some greater good, originally of martial courage or excellence but extended to more general moral excellence.”  -  Wikipedia

I’m amazed. It’s unbelievable how many bloggers think that you must be some kind of hero to make money blogging. Let me tell you that you don’t and what you need to make money blogging.

Darren Rowse, Zac Johnson, Daniel Scocco –just to name a few- … Sounds like if we were talking about people that have superior skills, guys that are half humans half Gods. Selected people only.

This is true, as they’re great guys, very intelligent, but they’re regular guys. Just like you and me.

Why they can make money blogging –more than that: making a living- while the rest of bloggers can only make a few pennies –and only a very small percentage making a very small amount- ?

I’ve wondered this before and came to this conclusion:

You don’t need to be a hero to make money blogging

No, you need only a few skills that, although not all humans have, they can be achieved by regular bloggers. Which are those skills?

Well, you can get some skills by applying some techniques, others just can’t be achieved. Let’s divide them.

Achievable Skills

-          Writing skills: You don’t need to be an Einstein in the art of writing, but your sentences should be easily to read.

-          Marketing skills: I always say that the best way to learn a new skill is by trying on your own, making your own experiments, analyzing what worked and what didn’t.

Experience is pretty useful online so you need to try.

Besides there are good ebooks out there, read some of them. Apart from that, did you ever hear that it takes money to make money?

-          Psychology skills: Marketing related. Making money blogging takes some psychology skills too. You need to play with your reader’s mind to convince them to buy something, to click here and there…

A perfect example about what I’m talking about is the post about how to catch reader’s attention and the psychological effects of colors.

I really think you don’t need much more than that. Those three main skills plus a good niche –you may want to check this post about how to choose a good niche- will be more than enough to make money blogging.

Not achievable

Those are the harder ones. Those are skills / advantages that you just can’t learn / get even if you try hard.

-          Luck: I’ve met persons that just don’t have luck on their side. Knowing that every business requires luck –on a bigger or smaller percentage- then you can realize why some people will just never made it.

Correction: Work can make you get over anything. Luck can make it easier, but it’s not like: “Hmm, I’m not lucky, I never gonna make it, I’m leaving it”.

-          Winners: Relate to the last sentence, you need to be a winner; you need to have a winner / positive attitude. If not, you’re losing even before starting.

This is something that you can barely change. Having a winner or a loser attitude depends on the way we’re educated. If you’re a guy that constantly heard “You never gonna make it” then you probably believe that, indeed, you never gonna make it.

Correction: You can change it. It requires time but you can change your attitude. This post in fact tries to change people’s mind.

-          Those bloggers who are making a huge amount of money are able to make it, apart from being intelligent and having talent, they were on the right place at the right time.

Maybe that time already passed, maybe not. It also depends on the niche.

I really believe that the time never passes. Working hard will make it.

-          Patience: I’d say it’s a pretty important factor to succeed on blogging, because it’s a hobby that requires lots of work and gives poor results on a short timeframe, so people just leave even before getting a bit of traffic.

I would say, to sum up, that the main skill you need to have is the ability to work, more than that, to keep working despite your results. If you do work, results will come sooner or later.

I hope this post can inspire some bloggers that are thinking about quitting blogging because they see the “make money blogging goal” as an impossible one.

As an example, I’m already making money from blogging, despite I’m spanish, I don’t receive that much traffic and I’m just starting –with this blog, I must admit that I’ve been blogging since 2004-2005- so you can obviously do it too.

Thanks for reading.

For the luck, if we do not have luck let’s create our luck on our own. ;)

I read an article yesterday from a successful blogger (that is not a famous blogger) and he said that the one key to his success was ‘people’. He wrote for people not search engines…and that is why his articles get such good results.

Marketing is surprisingly super important too. I might even say that marketing is just as important as content. You could be the next Shakespeare, but if you can’t get your work infront of others, nothing will happen. I frequently find myself creating decent websites, but I can’t find the time to market them and eventually it fails for me. A better marketer comes along and flips it for x10 by just marketing what I made. :/
